PRE-CONSTRUCTION: Project Status Update August 13, 2012

The processing of administrative contract paperwork by the City of Houston Department of Public Works and Engineering (PWE) for the Bellaire Boulevard Access Management and Widening project is nearing completion and the start of the project is anticipated in September 2012.

The ongoing private utility relocations along Bellaire Boulevard by various communication companies are progressing as scheduled and are expected to be complete by the end of August 2012.

The relocation work that is involved deals with removing aerial communication lines that share space on the existing Centerpoint Energy power poles. Once all secondary utilities are taken off the CenterPoint Energy power poles, CenterPoint Energy Electric will come out and remove the old power poles from Corporate to Beltway 8. The City of Houston PWE and the contractor are currently coordinating with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) in order to finalize permit requirements for working within the TxDOT right-of-way. This permit is a requirement for the contractor to begin work on Phase One of the project which includes: placement of approximately 100 linear feet of 66-inch storm sewer pipe, three large storm sewer manhole installations, high early strength concrete pavement, added right turn lane from Beltway 8 northbound frontage road to Bellaire Boulevard eastbound, added left turn lane from Beltway 8 southbound frontage road to Bellaire Boulevard eastbound, and installation of a temporary traffic signal at the intersection of Bellaire Boulevard and northbound Beltway 8 frontage road.

While the contractor is awaiting receiving the notice to proceed from the City’s PWE Department, the contractor has begun making arrangements to set up a field office and locate a staging yard. The contractor has also prepared submittal documents and a preliminary construction schedule. Once a notice to proceed date has been determined, a preconstruction meeting with the contractor will be scheduled to kick off the project.
